In a matter of months, Toronto FC has gone from “MLS Cup contenders” to “playoff hopefuls.”

The Reds have gone from impressive winners in Seattle to a group that’s desperate for a draw — a side that looks destined to drop points every time out.

Other than an uptick in effort, little changed Wednesday night in Philadelphia following Ryan Nelsen’s Sunday sacking.

“I thought the team put out a great effort,” new head coach Greg Vanney said. “I thought we worked hard from the beginning to the end, even when we went down a man.”

Toronto FC, while makeshift in defence, simply wasn’t good enough anywhere on the park — other than in net, that is.

Had Joe Bendik not stood on his head over 90 minutes at PPL Park, the score would have been much worse than 1-0, TFC’s third loss in four games.
