TORONTO - We were supposed to talk BMO Field expansion last May.
Instead, a halftime chit-chat with Tim Leiweke turned into the MLSE CEO lambasting me.
We sat face to face.
He wasn’t pleased.
Instead of talking redesign, Leiweke focused on my harsh criticism of Toronto FC’s 2-2 draw in Kansas City.
He was matter of fact, telling me how wrong I was to write negatively about the Reds following a hard-fought result on the road.
I couldn’t get a word in as he defended this city’s once-embattled soccer team.
I loved every minute of it.
Why? Because the man heading up the richest NHL team, the wealthiest Canadian conglomerate, had more than enough time to talk TFC.
“(Leiweke) is full of an incredible amount of energy and passion,” TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko told me.
“From Day 1, he’s gotten people focused on winning,” he added. “I have no doubt that will continue.”
