“Uh oh” was the common phrase among TFC fans when they learned of Jermain Defoe’s extended absence.

Without their leading goal-scorer, the Reds weren’t expected to do much on a month-long Eastern Conference road trip.

No Defoe, though, meant more Gilberto.

After producing the game-winner in Montreal last week, the Brazilian was even bigger Saturday night in Columbus, where the Reds claimed a 3-2 win to finish off a season sweep of the Crew.

“That’s what happens when you get good squad depth,” head coach Ryan Nelsen said of his strikers. “That was what we wanted. We wanted depth at that position.”

They got depth, and more. Much more, actually, when you consider their multi-million player is out with a groin injury.

Gilberto scored the opener midway through the first half — a brilliant tight-angle strike — before playing provider on a second from Jonathan Osorio.
