TORONTO - This comedic attempt should ease tension amid Toronto FC’s mid-season funk.

It worked for Daily Show host Jon Stewart in 2010 when he hosted a D.C. rally asking Americans to help him “restore sanity”.

“We live now in hard times, not end times,” Stewart told a crowd, an obvious shot at fear-mongoring cable news.

But senseless overreactions happen just as much in sports — something that has me thinking TFC needs a “Rally to Restore Sanity” for some of its own.

Had you asked TFC supporters back in January if they’d be happy sitting tied for third in the East midway through the season, they would have raised a glass.

Whisper the second part — the Reds still have multiple games in hand — and things don’t look nearly as bad considering Ryan Nelsen’s squad has tasted victory just once in its previous eight.

“All seasons are roller coasters, especially when you’re putting together a new team,” Nelsen said Friday afternoon.
