The true test of value, an NCAA coach once told me, is to pick out a soldier in the dressing room — a teammate you’d go to war with, if necessary.

A player who can rise above unfounded criticism while performing on the biggest stage, under the brightest of lights, inside the biggest venue — a field warrior, if you will.

It’s why Toronto FC’s Michael Bradley was dubbed “The General” before arriving at BMO Field.

But since the U.S. midfielder’s arrival, a bizarre off-field battle has been brewing, culminating in a vocal band of North American soccer fans blasting the best holding midfielder the U.S. has ever produced.

Everything came to a head during halftime of Monday night’s Seattle Sounders-L.A. Galaxy game on ESPN2 when former U.S. international Alexi Lalas took aim at “The General.”

“(Major League Soccer) overpaid for Michael Bradley,” Lalas said.
