Before an away date against the Crew in early April, I met with Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in the lobby of the Columbus Sheraton.
“I have you guys finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference,” I told him, unsure of how he’d react to my statement.
Unwilling to reply with his own prediction, Bezbatchenko pondered my claim before repeating what I’d said.
He added: “That gets us into the playoffs.”
That, in essence, has been the target ever since Toronto FC’s young GM took over for former club president Kevin Payne late last year.
I needn’t remind you of what TFC’s roster looked like back then. Most of those players are gone — either retired or playing in lower leagues.
Head coach Ryan Nelsen will play an entirely different starting XI on Saturday night against visiting Sporting Kansas City.
