Jermain Defoe's first-half penalty propelled Toronto FC to a 1-0 win over the visiting San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, sending the Reds into next week's World Cup break on a high.

Ahead of Saturday night's fixtures, the Reds jumped back above the red playoff line with multiple games in hand following an up and down start to the season that has seen them pick up 10 of 12 points heading into the break.

The Reds were awarded the game-winning spot kick in the 27th minute when on a corner, former TFC target man Alan Gordon pulled down Nick Hagglund inside the area.
