Referees are like in-laws: All fans loathe them until they need them.

When it's time to ask for a favour, or a call, everyone's on board.

You adore them when they get it right.

You disparage them when they get it wrong -- which, of course, is whenever they're not on your side.

That's how the story unfolds around Major League Soccer venues every week.

Toronto FC's closest supporters grumble whenever referee Dave Gantar arrives in Toronto.

Supporters run and hide whenever (Red Card) Ricardo Salazar rears his head.

The consensus around the league: MLS referees aren't up to snuff.

The Professional Referee Organization's answer: You're dead wrong.

"I don't agree that the referees are bad here," Paul Rejer told me exclusively over the weekend.
