TORONTO - Even if Jermain Defoe is being drop-dead truthful when he says he’s “100%” healthy, it seems impossible that Toronto FC’s star will go into his much-anticipated debut on Saturday completely comfortable in his new role.

When asked if any part of him wishes he could have spent the entire pre-season with TFC after his first training session with his new club on Monday, Defoe acknowledged it wouldn’t have hurt.

“Yeah, because obviously it helps the more you play with players going into the season,” Defoe told a large media contingent at the Kia Training Ground as Toronto resumed preparations for Saturday’s 2014 regular-season kickoff in Seattle against Sounders FC.

“Hopefully in training, they will understand how I play and vice-versa and we’ll be OK.”

It hasn’t been an ideal leadup to MLS action for Defoe, who suffered a hamstring injury while finishing off his time with Tottenham Hotspur. He’ll get a second training session with his teammates on Tuesday in Toronto before the club — which has experienced injury woes throughout the pre-season — makes its way to Seattle on Wednesday.

“I’m ready to play and I feel good,” said Defoe, adding he’s experiencing “no problems” with his hamstring.
