TORONTO - Toronto FC announced Wednesday night that former U.S. international Greg Vanney will take over for Thomas Rongen as the club’s academy director.

The Reds also announced Vanney will assume duties under general manager Tim Bezbatchenko as the club’s assistant GM.

When asked for comment, TFC officials would only say that Rongen, who joined Toronto at the start of 2012, would no longer be the club’s academy director. But every indication is that Rongen likely won’t remain with the team.

“Greg is a visionary when it comes to player development,” Bez said. “He shares our club’s passion for innovation and is an educator of both players and coaches. We are pleased to welcome him to Toronto FC.

“I’d like to thank Thomas for the tremendous job he has done over the past two years here. I have a great deal of respect for him and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Rongen didn’t return requests for comment from the Toronto Sun on Wednesday night.
