TORONTO - Tim Leiweke started and ended Thursday’s conversation with the same catchphrase.

“We’re not going to be afraid of making the tough decisions,” MLSE’s top boss said shortly after confirming Toronto FC general manager Kevin Payne’s dismissal after less than a full season.

Earl Cochrane, a long-time TFC front office suit, and Pat Onstad, who Leiweke said will no longer be TFC’s chief scout, were also presented with pink slips.

The reason being that the club’s next GM will build there staff as they see fit — with one exception.

“They’ve got to inherit our decision on (TFC head coach Ryan Nelsen),” Leiweke said.

As first reported by the Toronto Sun last week, TFC top brass confirmed Nelsen’s retention beyond this season late last week despite the Reds walking out to a nightmarish 4-12-10 record.
