Toronto FC passed on the opportunity to improve this week.

Truth be told, there were players out there — foreign targets who would have instantly made Toronto FC a better club ahead of Thursday’s summer transfer deadline, the club’s front office said.

But the Reds, as TFC general manager Kevin Payne explained Friday, elected to pass on the aforementioned talent.

“There were certainly players that we could have signed, but we weren’t trying to meet an artificial deadline,” Payne told the Sun ahead of Saturday’s match against the visiting Seattle Sounders. “We were trying to make sure we got the right guy.

“We were looking for players that we believed would be transformative and have a long lifespan at our team so we could build around them for a number of years. That makes (finding players) harder.”
