It was a bad start to the long weekend for Jeremy Hall, Ashtone Morgan and Reggie Lambe.

Toronto FC’s president and general manager Kevin Payne put guys like Robert Earnshaw and Richard Eckersley on notice, too.

“I’m not sure there will be anyone who started at the beginning of the season who will end up on the field (by season’s end),” Payne said in the buildup to Sunday’s match at New England.

This after the Reds welcomed a pair of players — Alvaro Rey and Jonas Elmer — into the squad during the the past two weeks, positional upgrades that could spell the end of a few of the aforementioned early season contributors.

“Through this period of difficulty we’ve learned a lot about the players we have,” Payne said a week after TFC came back to grab a dramatic 2-1 win over Columbus last weekend.

“We have a real good idea about the players we want to keep,” Payne continued.
