First-year Toronto FC defender Darel Russell was in the right place at the right time.

With more than a decade of experience in England’s Championship and League One, the 32-year-old’s aspirations to continue his career in North America led him to Florida this past winter.

“I’ve been planning on coming out to MLS for probably about a year and a half in terms of the way the situations have moved in the U.K.,” Russell told the Toronto Sun this week.

Following stops at Norwich City, Stoke City, Preston North End and Charlton Athletic, with his eyes firmly in the direction of MLS, Russell found himself on a month-to-month contract at Portsmouth last year.
