Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen called Matt Stinson’s release “a shame,” but admitted it had to be done as the club continues to “enhance certain positions.”

Stinson, 21, signed two seasons ago, was officially waived by the Reds prior to training on Tuesday.

“He’s handled himself really well,” Nelsen said, pointing to the club’s cap crunch as a reason for the former TFC Academy product’s release. “He’s a good professional. Unfortunately there just wasn’t enough room as we’re moving forward.
