For 60 minutes, it was difficult to distinguish which side was third tier during Toronto FC’s third-to-last tuneup at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports.
Sure, the Reds were without high-priced midfielders Torsten Frings and Julio Cesar, as well as starting left back Ashtone Morgan, all of whom sat out with various niggles and knocks during Wednesday night’s 3-0 exhibition win over host Orlando City, a third-tier side currently playing in USL Pro.
But based on the one-way traffic reserve ’keeper Joe Bendik faced for a large portion of what was, at best, a decidedly average display, the Reds appear to be a fair distance away from being ready for Opening Day.
“This was (Orlando’s) home fans. They came out all guns blazing and we expected that,” head coach Ryan Nelsen said of the match. “We didn’t think it was going to be as bad as it was, but it’s great to experience that now.”
