It’s the kind of coaching philosophy you’d expect from a former World Cup Best XI defender.
If anything, Toronto FC will at least be fit and organized under Ryan Nelsen, and he hopes the game’s other elements will follow.
“The team conceded (a lot of) goals last year and you can’t really do anything with that,” Nelsen told the Sun following Sunday’s training session in central Florida.
“We’re trying to get our foundation set so that when things don’t go well, or the passes don’t happen, or it’s just an off-day at the office, we’ll have something to fall back on. We have a safety net and that safety net is going to be the organization.”
Although he stressed the club is continuing to work on how it transitions offensively out of defence, Nelsen, a former defender with multiple Premier League sides, is utilizing some of the traits he picked up from his time as a top professional to re-shape the way the Reds defend.
