In 2009, Toronto FC made a pair of decisions that undoubtedly hindered its success for the better part of four seasons.

With the Nos. 2 and 4 picks heading into that year’s MLS SuperDraft, the Reds — most would agree — blew their lottery picks on a role-playing midfielder and an overrated forward who’s no longer in MLS.

After trading the first-overall pick to the New England Revolution for the No. 4 pick and cash Wednesday night, the Reds find themselves in a similar situation to the opportunity they had in 2009 — the club now controls the Nos. 3 and 4 picks in Thursday’s draft after likely getting assured of who the Revs will take.
