TORONTO - A second half equalizer from Liverpool's Adam Morgan cancelled Quincy Amarakwa's opener on the hour mark before a 1-1 finish at Rogers Centre Saturday night.
Amarakwa's opener seemed to energize England's Reds, who are at the start of a North American tour in preparation for the upcoming European season.
Trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining, second-half substitute Joe Cole collected along the right touchline before completing a quick one-two just outside the penalty area. Cole's pass along the edge of the box found Raheem Sterling, who beat TFC's Dicoy Williams to the outside before playing a ball across goal for Morgan's easy finish.
Using a second half lineup comprised of academy players and reserves, Toronto provided the 33,087 in attendance a shock opener in the 58th minute when Sergio Camargo found space at the top of the centre circle before taking the 20 metres of space in front of him. Cutting to his right just outside the area, Camargo's shot forced Peter Gulacsi down to his right but the rebound set up nicely for Amarakwa, who scored in his first appearance with the club.
Toronto announced early Saturday morning it had signed Amarakwa after sending a conditional draft pick to the New York Red Bulls for the forward.
With the visitors playing without the services of many of their big name players, TFC made a good account of itself throughout the first half, using the same first 11 that started Wednesday's league match against Colorado.
Toronto had the only real chance in the first half when Luis Silva knocked down a ball just outside the penalty area to a wide up Johnson just inside the box in the seventh minute. Johnson's open look forced Brad Jones down to his left to push the ball away from danger.
Liverpool had shouts for a penalty in the 34th minute when a long distance effort from Charlie Adam appeared to strike Terry Dunfield's extended arm as it screamed towards goal. But referee Paul Ward swallowed his whistle, keeping things level before most of Toronto's first team players made their exits at the half.
