Montreal selects Wenger No. 1, TFC grabs Silva

KANSAS CITY, MO - The Montreal Impact selected Andrew Wenger from Duke with the No. 1 pick Thursday in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

Wenger, a forward and defender, was recently honored as the MAC Hermann Trophy winner as the best male collegiate soccer player in the nation.

The 21-year-old Wenger was also named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year for his standout junior season, when he had 17 goals and eight assists. A standout in attack last year, he was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2010.

Wenger started all 63 of Duke’s matches during his three seasons with the team and finished with 21 goals and 13 assists.

He is currently training with the U.S. Olympic team.

Montreal will debut in MLS in 2012 as an expansion team, giving the league 19 clubs - including three in Canada.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC took Akron forward Darren Mattocks with the second pick and the New England Revolution selected Maryland midfielder Kelyn Rowe third.

Toronto FC selected UC-Santa Barbara midfielder Luis Silva fourth, and Chivas USA picked Maryland forward Casey Townsend fifth.

The San Jose Earthquakes grabbed UC-Santa Barbara forward Sam Garza sixth, and D.C. United followed with Louisville midfielder Nick DeLeon with the seventh pick.

The Portland Timbers picked defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste eighth, the Chicago Fire choose Louisville defender Austin Berry ninth, and the Columbus Crew took Creighton forward Ethan Finlay with the 10th pick.
