Toronto FC has come to terms with forward Joao Plata on a multi-year contract, it was announced on Wednesday.
Plata was the 49th overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and went on to appear in 26 games for TFC this past season, scoring three goals and assisting on five more.
"We are very happy to get this deal completed and keep Plata at our club," said Toronto FC head coach and technical director Aron Winter. "Plata had a great year with us in 2011. He made a strong contribution on the pitch.
"Re-signing Plata was a high priority for our club during the offseason. I have to compliment everyone involved for making this a reality. Plata wanted to remain in Toronto and we wanted to keep him. We know our fans will be happy with this announcement."
In addition to a strong rookie campaign in MLS, the 19-year-old Plata earned his first international cap for Ecuador in June.
Toronto will return to action on March 7 when the club faces the Los Angeles Galaxy in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
