From the sounds of things at Tuesday’s season-ending media conference, TFC’s next general manager and coach will be new faces.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Limited chief operating officer Tom Anselmi told reporters that the new GM would pick his own coach — likely leaving interim bench boss Nick Dasovic in another role.

Anselmi also inferred that interim GM Earl Cochrane lacks the experience to land the permanent job.

“Earl would tell you he’d probably prefer to be a candidate four or five years from now when he has more of a track record,” Anselmi said.

“He’s a real knowledgeable guy, knows the North American game, North American players, but probably doesn’t have the stature and track record to make himself a serious candidate.”

Anselmi said the organization is close to signing a deal with a consulting agency that will help them: “With more than a search (for a director of soccer), looking at our whole soccer operations, helping us take it to the next level.”

TFC would prefer to have someone in place prior to the coming expansion and entry drafts, but is prepared to wait for the right candidate and remains confident in the abilities of Cochrane, Jim Brennan and the rest of the current staff.

When asked if the new GM has to be a “big name” guy, Anselmi discussed the difficulties of finding a well-known option with experience in MLS, because the pool of people who know the league inside-out and also boast an impressive resume is not a deep one.

“There’s clearly a difference in (being a GM) here than in Europe, South America and the like,” Anselmi said.

Anselmi said season-ticket renewals are going well as a result of the club reacting to complaints from its supporters.

“We heard two things from (the fan base): The team didn’t live up to expectations this year, I agree and we heard pricing of our tickets and the size of the package has been too aggressive and we said, I agree. We dealt with the latter, now we need to deal with the former.”
