Even iffy, Becks a draw

Sunday's soccer match is the hottest ticket this summer -- even with the uncertainty its headliner will make an appearance.

The big question of whether or not soccer superstar David Beckham will play in Toronto couldn't be answered definitively yesterday -- leaving fans, ticket-sellers, and pretty much everybody else wondering if Becks' ankle will be healed in time for the L.A. Galaxy's game against Toronto FC.

The man they sometimes call Golden Balls twisted his left ankle during England's 3-0 victory over Estonia on June 6. He was expected to miss the Galaxy's SuperLiga tournament game against FC Dallas last night.

$1,000 PRICE TAG

But despite the uncertainty surrounding Beckham's status for this weekend at BMO Field, the summer's hottest sports ticket was burning a hole in scalpers' pockets yesterday, with some sellers slapping a $1,000 price tag on a pair of tix for the highly anticipated event.

Put in context, for a single Toronto FC match, the most expensive seat at BMO Field runs about $100 for a premium game -- matches including the home opener, as well as games against Houston Dynamo, New York Red Bull and this Sunday's Galaxy game.

TICKETS WILL BE RARE

But still, don't expect to find too many tickets. Most of the games at the 20,000-capacity BMO Field, including this Sunday's contest, have been sold out. Season tickets are also sold out.

It's why brazen sellers like Frank, 33, of Toronto, have the audacity to ask for a grand for a pair of Beckham tickets.

Frank, who wouldn't give his last name, yesterday put a pair of second-row seats on the online classified ads site Craig's List. His pair was the most expensive, although other pairs were going for $500 and $250.

"I just got an offer for $900, but I'm going to hold off," Frank said yesterday.
