WARSAW - Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai, who was in charge of the officiating crew that handled the England-Ukraine game at Euro 2012, has been sent home.

Kassai's crew was at the centre of controversy because the fifth official failed to validate a goal scored by Ukraine's Marco Devic. The ball crossed the line but the goal was not given. The goal would have tied the game 1-1, which England went on to win 1-0.

Even if the score had been 1-1, Ukraine would still have been eliminated.

In the past, when one member of a refereeing crew made a mistake, the entire crew was sent home.

Pierluigi Collina, the head of referees for UEFA, said that no longer happens. But Kassai was sent home Wednesday as part of UEFA's usual cut down of officials for the second round.

Collina said it would have been "unfair" to expose Kassai to additional pressure following the missed goal call, which has prompted renewed calls for the introduction of goal-line technology.
