NYON, Switzerland -- England striker Wayne Rooney received a three-game ban Thursday from UEFA, ruling him out of the group stage of next summer's Euro 2012 finals.
Rooney was sent off in the second half of a 2-2 draw against Montenegro last Friday in Euro qualifying, and UEFA decided the offense was worthy of a three- game ban.
Should England fail to advance from the group stage, Rooney would not play in the tournament. England and Rooney have three days to appeal the decision.
