Canada falls to England in Cyprus Cup final

The Canadian women’s national soccer team suffered heartbreak Wednesday for the second straight year at the Cyprus Cup as England claimed a 1-0 win in the tournament’s final in Nicosia.

Rachel Yankey’s goal in the 70th minute held up for England as the Canadians struggled to create any quality chances in front of goal throughout the match.

"England was the better team tonight," Canadian head coach John Herdman said. “Give them credit."

After falling 2-0 to France in last year’s tournament final, Canada was denied a fourth Cyprus Cup title after winning in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

"We will have another opportunity against (England) next month."

After facing France in Nice in an international friendly on April 4, Canada will travel to play England in Rotherham on April 7.
