Tiffeny Milbrett's successful 90th minute penalty kick helped the Vancouver Whitecaps avoid suffering their first W-League home shutout yesterday.

Fort Collins Force defender Estelle Johnson fouled Whitecap Jodi-Ann Robinson during the waning moments of the afternoon match. Milbrett put the ball behind Force goalkeeper Tawny Poggio for the 1-0 win. Fort Collins was moments away from tying the Whitecaps for the second time this season. The teams finished 1-1 on June 18 in Colorado.

"Give kudos to the ref for calling it," Milbrett said. "Even at the highest level of the World Cup they're afraid of calling it in the last minute."

The only time Whitecaps were shutout was in 2004's scoreless W-League championship final against the New Jersey Wildcats. Whitecaps were eventual winners on penalty kicks.

Whitecaps were missing six regulars who were involved in Canada's 2-1 win over Italy in yesterday's friendly near Toronto.

The 9-0-1 Whitecaps have two home games remaining, including Friday's in Nanaimo against the San Diego Gauchos.
