London City's goal drought against the Vaughan Shooters is finally over.

London didn't score a goal against Vaughan all last year in Canadian Professional Soccer League play and City hadn't beaten the Shooters in three years.

Karim Ben Sari's rebound header in the 48th minute last night at Cove Road field gave City a 1-0 victory over the Shooters and a 4-1 record for the season.

"To finally take some points from this team is really satisfying," said City manager Harry Gauss.

On the scoring play, Vaughan keeper Gregory Drakes made a brilliant diving save on a Gentjan Dervishi free kick but couldn't get back up for the rebound.

"I saw the keeper had been dropping balls. I just lunged in," Ben Sari said.

"I'm pumped."

He also scored the lone goal in City's 1-0 win over Brampton last weekend.

The Shooters, who lost to Toronto Croatia in the CPSL championship final last October, allowed only 23 goals in 20 games last season.

They scored 41 goals last season but couldn't convert last night and took some of their frustration out on City players.

Known as an aggressive team, Vaughan had one player kicked out with two minutes left in the game. Fitzroy Christie was given a red card for punching London forward Erik Elmauer in the back of the head.

The Shooters also received a yellow card for rough play. Forward Frankie Bruno was shown the yellow when he put out his knee as City's Miguel Knox ran by.

Vaughan's Desmond Humphrey received a yellow for verbal abuse toward the referee.

No serious injuries resulted from the rough play.

City's Dennis Peeters left the field with a bloody nose after a ball lobbed toward the referee by a Vaughan player at the end of the first half struck him in the face.

Peeters had broken his nose in the team's previous game against Brampton.

Gauss said he was pleased that his players didn't retaliate, adding: "They were composed when the game got hot."
