Last victory ancient history
By CAMERON MAXWELL -- Calgary Sun
You've got to flip the calendar a long way back to find the last time Team Calgary won a soccer game.
In fact, it's been more than two months since the club -- formerly known as the Calgary Storm --beat Cincinnati 1-0 on June 6.
With the USL-run side in soccer limbo after former owner Michael Vandale left at the end of June, and with the losses piling up, a win today (Foothills Athletic Park, 3 p.m.) against Milwaukee Wave United would go a long way to boosting team morale.
"It would be massive, absolutely massive," said Calgary head coach Tommy Wheeldon, whose side comes in with a dismal 4-17-3 record.
"The spirits are good, we've trained hard, we've worked on certain things this week defensively.
"If we can beat Milwaukee -- and this fifth win is what we set our sights on -- it would be fantastic for the lads."
A victory would give Team Calgary one more win than it had (4-21-3) in its inaugural A-League campaign last year.
"I've never been in a situation like this in my life. It really kills me, especially when you play so well against Vancouver and you're up 1-0 and you don't get a break from the referee and then two silly mistakes," said Wheeldon, referring to a 2-1 loss to the Whitecaps on Tuesday, when Vancouver won it on two late goals.
"You could see our players physically drain.
"As soon as that (first) goal goes in, we've got no comeback.
"We're not a team that can do that because we're young and inexperienced.
"Every defeat is hurting them badly and there was a few arguments (after the Vancouver match), which I like. That shows a lot of passion."
With every loss taking a toll on the club, English newcomer Shaun Wimble said the mood is still remarkably good.
"I've come over and I'm aware of the team's position and the spirit is very good. The lads all get along great, stay as a team and we're all working hard to pull out of this," said the 25-year-old midfielder from Swindon, England, who played his first game of the season against Vancouver.
"We will get that win and hopefully we start (today)."
