A disturbing report trickled out of Southeast Asia on Monday after media learned a footballer died during an Indonesian Premier League match.

Persiraja striker Akli Fairuz passed away last week just days after being on the receiving end of a horror tackle from SSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman.

Video of the incident shows Fairuz follow up a shot before entering into a 50-50 challenge with Rahman, who inexplicably comes out with his studs up before planting them firmly in his opponent’s midsection.

Although he left the match injured, Fairuz seemed fine on the bench in the moments following the incident.

The next day, however, multiple media reports indicated Fairuz’s condition deteriorated.

He was later found to have severe internal bleeding – allegedly a result of the tackle – and doctors were unable to save him during surgery.

U.K.'s The Daily Mail also reported Fairuz suffered bladder leakage.

Club Persiraja has since announced an inquiry into the incident.
