Getafe’s Alexis Ruano suffered one of the worst soccer injuries in recent memory this week.

There was no blood.

No broken bones, either.

For most men, what happened to the 28-year-old Spanish defender was far worse.

After entering into a first-half tackle, Ruano stayed down after popping multiple veins in his testicle, causing it to swell to the size of a small balloon.

His manager, Luis Garcia, described the scene following his side’s 2-0 loss to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, Spain’s annual domestic Cup competition.

“Alexis has a testicle like this,” he said while gesturing the size of a handball with his hands, according to reports.

“Some veins were broken. When I entered the changing room, I was scared, but it's not serious.”

“I've never seen anything like it.”

Ruano is doubtful for Getafe’s league tilt against Real Sociedad on Sunday, but is expected to recover.

In 2011, Blackburn’s Scott Dann suffered a similar, more serious, injury in a 2-1 loss to Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.

A ruptured testicle in that game kept Dann out for six weeks as he needed surgery to repair the rare injury.
