Major League Soccer cleared winger Robbie Rogers to play on Sunday night for the Los Angeles Galaxy after announcing it received his International Transfer Certificate.

If Rogers sees action, he will become the first openly gay athlete to compete in an American professional team sporting event.

The Galaxy plays host to the Seattle Sounders in a game that begins at 11 p.m. ET Sunday and will be televised by ESPN2.

The team reached a multiyear deal with Rogers on Saturday after it traded Mike Magee to acquire Rogers’ rights from the Chicago Fire.

Rogers had retired from the sport during the winter but decided to make a comeback after speaking with children last month about being a gay athlete. Before he stepped away from soccer, Rogers played with Leeds United in England for more than a year but left the team by mutual consent.
