Christine Sinclair did not have a female soccer role model growing up, so she understands the importance of being one now.
The Canadian Olympic hero has for years been in the soccer spotlight due to her accomplishments with the national women’s team. But Sinclair’s performance in London this summer made her a celebrity beyond soccer circles and an idol to young girls everywhere.
“Heading into the Olympics our goal was obviously to win a medal, but perhaps more importantly, to try and change the sport in Canada,” Sinclair said. “We wanted to give some young kids role models to look up to. Growing up, my hero was Roberto Alomar, not that there is anything wrong with that, but it’s nice to see that times have changed.”
This week, Sinclair along with Olympic teammates Diana Matheson, Karina LeBlanc and Rhian Wilkinson got an opportunity to work with those in Edmonton who look up to them.
