One of the biggest tournaments outside the FIFA World Cup will be coming to the U.S. in 2016.

In what’s being hailed as a “mega-tournament,” CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American soccer, announced Wednesday that the U.S. will host the 45th Copa America, which will be expanded to include six additional CONCACAF nations.

During a five-hour meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, representatives from each of South America's 10 federation gathered to hammer out tournament details.

While each of CONMEBOL’s 10 teams will receive automatic entry along with the U.S. and Mexico, the 2015 Gold Cup, CONCACAF’s continental tournament, will be used to decide which four CONCACAF nations will round out the 16-team competition, which is scheduled to take place in July of 2016.

After its shock win at the 2000 Gold Cup, Canada received a special invite to the 2001 Copa America in Colombia but pulled out after the host nation was deemed unsafe.
