New York Red Bulls coach Mike Jones was stabbed to death Sunday in Greenwich Village.
The 25-year-old Brit, who was a coach with the Red Bulls Youth Training Program the last five years, was attacked early Sunday morning near Union Square and died at Bellevue Hospital in New York. A New York Police Department spokesman told BBC.com that Jones had been found with a severed ear and stab wounds to the neck and head.
“We are aware of this tragedy and on behalf of the entire organization, want to send our most heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, friends and loved ones,” the MLS team said in a statement. “He was a tremendous individual, a fantastic coach who loved soccer and a terrific friend for many of us. This is truly a sad day for our soccer community and we will do our utmost to help authorities in their investigation of this case.”
Jones, from Liverpool, also coached the Armonk (N.Y.) United youth soccer team. He spent 10 months of the year in the U.S. working as a coach.
