Stoke City signs former England striker Owen

STOKE-ON-TRENT, ENGLAND - Stoke City signed former England striker Michael Owen on a free transfer on Tuesday, pending approval of the English Premier League Board.

Owen, 32, has scored 221 goals in 473 career club appearances, covering stints with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Manchester United.

Owen played for Liverpool from 1996-2004, for Real from 2004-05, for Newcastle from 2005-09 and for Manchester United from 2009-12. He was released by United at the end of last season. He joins Stoke on a one-year contract.

Capped 89 times for England from 1998-2008, Owen had 40 international goals.
