Solo, Wambach on short list for Ballon d'Or

ZURICH - U.S. women's forward Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo were among the 10 players named to the short list for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d'Or on Tuesday, the award given to the world's best player.

Wambach and Solo were key figures in the Americans' run to the 2011 World Cup final, a shootout defeat to Japan. Japanese star Homare Sawa is also among the challengers to Brazil's Marta, who has won the award five straight years.

The 10 finalists for coach of the year were also announced, and Japan coach Norio Sasaki and U.S. coach Pia Sundhage were among those selected.

The short lists for the men's FIFA Ballon d'Or award and the men's FIFA World Coach of the Year will be named Nov. 1. The three finalists for both coaches and players will be announced Dec. 5. The winners will be revealed on Jan. 9.

The following 10 women were named to the short list:

Sonia Bompastor (France), Kerstin Garefrekes (Germany), Marta (Brazil), Aya Miyama (Japan), Alex Morgan (United States), Louisa Necib (France), Homare Sawa (Japan), Lotta Schelin (Sweden), Hope Solo (United States), Abby Wambach (United States).
