CHICAGO -- U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati announced on Friday that Jurgen Klinsmann has been named the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team.

"We are excited to have Jurgen as the head coach of our Men's National Team," said Gulati. "He is a highly accomplished player and coach with the experience and knowledge to advance the program. Jurgen has had success in many different areas of the game and we look forward to the leadership he will provide on and off the field."

Klinsmann was an accomplished player for Germany as he scored 47 goals in 108 appearances for the national team before taking over as manager in 2004.

He posted a 20-8-6 record during his time in charge, which included a third-place finish at the 2006 World Cup, before stepping down following the competition.

A stint at Bayern Munich for the 2008-09 season followed, while his latest assignment was a consulting position with Major League Soccer club Toronto FC.

"I am proud and honoured to be named the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team," said Klinsmann. "I would like to thank the U.S. Soccer Federation for the opportunity, and I'm excited about the challenge ahead. I am looking forward to bringing the team together for our upcoming match against Mexico and starting on the road toward qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup."

Klinsmann's first match comes against Mexico in a friendly on Aug. 10 before a pair of friendlies in early September with Costa Rica and Belgium.
