Canada finishes dead last in World Cup
By MORRIS DALLA COSTA, QMI Agency
Even when Canada's women's national soccer team doesn't play, it can't avoid bad news.
Canada not only finished 0-3 in Group A play and headed home earlier than expected but after everyone concluded group play Wednesday at the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany, it wound up dead last in the 16-team tournament.
Yes, Canada somehow managed to finish behind Equatorial Guinea.
Going into the last group games Wednesday, Canada was in the running with Equatoria Guinea, Colombia and North Korea for the basement position.
Colombia and North Korea played to a 0-0 draw giving both one point and Equatorial Guinea lost to Brazil. Guinea also had Australia and Norway in its group.
Canada and Equatorial Guinea gave up seven goals in the tournament but the small African nation, which sits on the West Coast between Cameroon and Gabon, scored twice, one more than the Canadians.
Somehow, "We're No. 16" is not a chant that's likely to catch on.
