NEW YORK -- D.C. United acquired veteran playmaker Dwayne De Rosario in a trade with Red Bull New York on Monday night in exchange for midfielder Dax McCarty.

De Rosario, 33, joined New York earlier this season in a trade with Toronto FC and made 13 appearances for the Red Bulls. D.C. acquired McCarty from Portland in November for defender Rodney Wallace. McCarty played 13 times for D.C.

"We signed one of the best players MLS has ever seen in Dwayne De Rosario," said United coach Ben Olsen. "In order to gain a quality piece we gave up a quality player in Dax McCarty, but we feel that De Rosario is a game-changer that will help us in our push for playoffs."

De Rosario is a four-time MLS Cup winner, having claimed the MLS Cup MVP award on two separate occasions in 2001 and 2007. The midfielder is a five-time MLS All-Star, and has been selected to the MLS Best XI five times.

He helped the Houston Dynamo win back-to-back MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007, and also helped San Jose to two MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003. In his 11 MLS seasons, De Rosario boasts 80 career goals and 56 assists -- good for 11th and 20th in league history, respectively.

McCarty, 24, amassed 93 appearances, 71 starts, five goals and 17 assists over five seasons with FC Dallas before joining United last offseason. He has made five appearances for the U.S. national team.

"Dax is an exciting young player who will immediately add his dynamic style of play to our midfield," said Red Bull New York General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. "He is an excellent two-way player who will contribute both to our defence and to our attack for seasons to come."

"To acquire such a promising player, we had to make a difficult decision in trading Dwayne."

United also acquired defender Brandon McDonald from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for allocation money Monday.
