ZURICH -- Barcelona forward Lionel Messi received the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or award on Monday, given to the world's best player.

This is the second successive year that Messi has taken home the award, beating out Barcelona teammates Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

The 23-year-old tallied 42 goals in 36 league games for Barcelona, while also leading the Champions League with 12 goals in 12 games.

However, he becomes the first player to win the award in a World Cup year when his national team did not lift the World Cup.

The other two finalists, Xavi and Iniesta, both won the World Cup with Spain this past summer.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho was named FIFA World Coach of the Year after he guided Inter Milan to a historic treble last season, while Brazilian Marta won the FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award for the fifth successive time, beating out Germany internationals Birgit Prinz and Lira Bajramaj.

Is the season lost for the Toronto Blue Jays or is there still time to turn things around?
Plenty of time to get it turned around
They're quickly running out of time
It's lost. When do the Argos start?
It was over before it began
