MAINZ, Germany -- Mainz lost for the fifth time in its last seven games on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Schalke on a goal from Jefferson Farfan.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar failed to convert a penalty kick in the seventh minute for Schalke, but the visitors went in front with Farfan's goal on the half-hour mark.

Mainz had a chance to salvage a point in the 73rd minute, but Andre Schurrle's penalty kick was saved by Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Mainz falls to fourth place with the defeat, while Schalke has now won three of its last four games to climb to 10th.

Schalke was handed an early chance to take the lead when Farfan was fouled inside the penalty area by Christian Fuchs. However, Huntelaar saw his penalty kick crash off the post.

The visitors went in front with a bit of luck later in the half as Jose Jurado's shot struck the back of his teammate Raul, allowing the ball to fall for Farfan to drive past goalkeeper Christian Wetklo.

Sami Allagui drew a penalty kick on Neuer with 15 minutes to play, but the keeper produced a big save on Schurrle's spot kick. The ball was not properly cleared by the Schalke defense, and it nearly cost them as Adam Szalai had his shot deflect off of Christoph Metzelder and onto the crossbar.

Freiburg moved into fifth place on Sunday after beating Monchengladbach, 3-0. Papiss Cisse scored two of the goals to give him 13 on the season, while Oliver Barth added the other.
