MUNICH -- Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2016.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a move away from the club as his previous contract was set to expire at the end of next season, with Premiership sides Chelsea and Manchester United being reported targets.

But the Germany international has now committed his future to the club, which won 3-0 against St. Pauli on Saturday to move into fifth place in the Bundesliga table.

Schweinsteiger has been in the Bayern system since 1998 and made his debut with the senior club as an 18-year-old in 2002.
