ROME -- The Italian Professional Players' Association (AIC) has voted to go on strike during the weekend of Sept. 25-26 to protest plans by Serie A owners that would reduce the rights of players in transfer dealings.

AC Milan defender Massimo Oddo, who is a spokesman for the AIC, said in a statement on Friday: "The association, in accordance with the players of Serie A, has decided that they will not take to the pitch for the fifth round of matches of the Serie A championship on Sept. 25 and 26 in protest against requests to impose new contractual rules."

"The players are fed up with being treated like objects and not like people. We are dealing with human rights here."

A contract between the AIC and the owners, which guaranteed players' rights, expired over the summer and a new agreement has yet to be reached.

The two sides will meet on Monday to discuss the issue, but the players are upset with the fact that the owners would like to be able to force players in the final year of their contract to move teams, or buy out the final year of the contract at 50% of its worth.
