London, England – Theo Walcott scored a hat trick as Arsenal rolled to a 6-0 win over Blackpool at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
The promoted side was coming off of a 4-0 win over Wigan in its first game, but things went much differently on Saturday as Walcott scored the opener in the 12th minute and Ian Evatt was sent off for a foul on Marouane Chamakh that allowed Andrei Arshavin to convert from the penalty spot.
Walcott then scored shortly before halftime to make it 3-0, while Abou Diaby and Walcott scored nine minutes apart and Chamakh scored his first Arsenal goal seven minutes from time.
Following such a successful opener, Blackpool got a dose of reality from the Gunners, who took the lead in the 12th minute as Walcott finished off a pass from Tomas Rosicky inside the penalty area.
Any hope that Blackpool had of mounting a comeback vanished in the 32nd minute when Evatt brought down Chamakh at the top of the box, earning himself a red card and giving Arshavin the chance to double the lead from the penalty spot, which he did with little trouble.
Walcott scored a nice third goal as he turned well with the ball and rolled his shot inside the far post, while Diaby swept home Bacary Sagna's cross early in the second half to make it 4-0.
Diaby set up Walcott's third goal in the 58th minute, and Chamakh got his name on the scoresheet seven minutes from time by heading home Robin Van Persie's corner kick.
Chelsea won by a 6-0 score for the second time to start the season as they hammered Wigan at the DW Stadium with two goals from Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou, while Johan Elmander scored twice in a 3-1 Bolton win against West Ham.
Peter Odemwingie scored the lone goal in his West Bromwich debut as the Baggies downed Sunderland, 1-0, Tottenham topped Stoke City, 2-1, with two goals from Gareth Bale, Everton and Wolverhampton played to a 1-1 draw and Craig Gardner found the net twice in the second half for Birmingham in a 2-1 comeback win against Blackburn.
