LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool and Spain striker Fernando Torres said Tuesday he is "really happy to play at Anfield," and plans to stay at the English Premier League club.
Liverpool finished seventh in the EPL last season, leading to speculation that Torres could leave the club. But, Steven Gerrard recently committed his future to the club and Torres followed suit.
"I am really happy to be back, really happy to stay with all my teammates," Torres told liverpoolfc.tv. "My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed.
"I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. I felt at home from the first day, I feel the fans love me and everyone knows I am really happy here and really happy to play at Anfield."
Torres helped Spain lift the World Cup trophy, despite a disappointing showing for the hitman, and plans to lead Liverpool back into the top four in England.
"It was difficult last season but we are sure we can improve this season," he said.
Liverpool opens the season Aug. 15 against Arsenal.
