Manchester, England - Manchester United earned a 3-2 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday at Old Trafford, but they failed to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League as they lost out on away goals.

The two-legged quarterfinal finished 4-4 on aggregate, but it was a stunning volley from Arjen Robben in the 73rd minute that pulled Bayern to within 3-2 and gave them the edge in the away goals category.

United jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half with Darron Gibson scoring after three minutes and Nani adding two more goals.

However, Bayern pulled a goal back through Ivica Olic right before the break, and United defender Rafael was sent off five minutes after the restart.

Robben then sent Bayern through with a volley from Franck Ribery's corner kick, and the German side will face Lyon in the semifinals after their 3-2 aggregate win over Bordeaux.

Wayne Rooney got a surprise start despite injuring his ankle only eight days ago, and he set up the opening goal by laying a pass off to Gibson, who lashed a shot past goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt from 20 yards.

Antonio Valencia supplied the cross that led to United's second goal when he drove a low ball to the front of goal and had it redirected inside the far post by a neat backheel from Nani.

United was flying, and after Rafael went close with a shot in the 34th minute, United added a third goal as Valencia and Nani teamed up again with the Portuguese international firing a first-time shot just underneath the crossbar.

Bayern got back into the game two minutes before halftime as some poor defending by Michael Carrick allowed Olic to beat goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar at close range from a tight angle.

The goal lifted the visitors and they soon had a numerical advantage when Rafael was booked for the second time after he grabbed Ribery in the open field in the 50th minute.

Nani almost added to United's lead when his effort was tipped over the crossbar by Butt five minutes later, while Ribery had a powerful volley parried by Van der Sar.

Substitute Mario Gomez saw his header skip off the top of the crossbar for Bayern, but they got the deciding goal five minutes later when Ribery's corner was smashed brilliantly inside the far post by Robben with a first-time volley.

United had trouble gaining possession in order to mount an attack, and the closest they came to scoring was a 25-yard shot from Nani that rolled harmlessly wide one minute from time
