Alfie's recovery ahead of schedule
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, Ottawa Sun

There is good news and bad news on the injury front.

Winger Milan Michalek is out long-term with what's believed to be a concussion while captain Daniel Alfredsson is on the mend and could be back in a week to 10 days.

Alfredsson's shoulder injury had been expected to keep him out until February.

He has skated three or four times on his own. He might join the club on its road trip, which starts Sunday in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"It's not a surprise he is ahead of schedule," said coach Cory Clouston.

Centre Jason Spezza could be back from his knee injury in three weeks.

Goaltender Brian Elliott will get the start Saturday against the Florida Panthers at Scotiabank Place.

With the arrival of Martin St. Pierre and Zack Smith from the club's AHL affiliate in Binghamton, it would appear winger Shean Donovan will be a healthy scratch along with defenceman Alex Picard.

"(St. Pierre) will get different opportunities," said Clouston.

Here is a look at the way the club lined up during Saturday's morning skate:

Lines

  • Shannon-Fisher-Kovalev
  • Foligno-Regin-Neil
  • Ruutu-Kelly-Cheechoo
  • Smith-St. Pierre-Winchester

    Defence

  • Phillips-Volchenkov
  • Kuba-Karlsson
  • Campoli-Carkner
