Toure undergoing surgery
By BOB MACKIN, SUN MEDIA

Things went from bad to worse for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The day after a 2-2 tie with United Soccer Leagues' First division newcomers Cleveland City Stars, Vancouver announced midfielder Ansu Toure would undergo knee ligament surgery today.

Liberia-born Toure was a key offseason acquisition from the Atlanta Silverbacks. He scored both goals in the Caps' 2-0 Nutrilite Canadian Championship series win over Toronto FC on June 2. The meniscus tear in Toure's left knee occurred during the Caps' preseason tour of Tanzania, but was aggravated in recent games.

Vancouver registered only one USL win during June. The Caps' next game is July 9 when the Minnesota Thunder visit Swangard Stadium.

Defender Luca Bellisomo and midfielder Vicente Arze were demoted yesterday to the Caps' Premier Development League reserve squad for conditioning.
