Sam Lam has but one request.
"Vote early and vote often," said Lam.
The 21-year-old Edmonton Drillers forward and former Alberta Golden Bears midfielder found himself in a unique selection process to be a member of the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer.
The team pitched the idea that they would offer three positions on their team to players who went through a couple of selection camps. And the cool thing is the camps would be taped and televised in the Seattle area.
In late November, Lam was one of about 1,000 people who responded to the Sounders SuperSearch and went down to a selection camp in Yakima, one of three regional tryouts.
Turns out that Lam was one of the 10 players named to move onto the final selection camp on Jan. 30.
The Yakima tryout was taped and will be aired on Seattle NBC affiliate KING-TV's Evening Magazine tomorrow.
The final camp will be aired following the Super Bowl on Feb. 1.
Here's where it starts getting fun.
Starting on Friday, fans can visit www.king5.com to view videos, biogs and comments from evaluators for all 10 finalists.
Fans can vote for their favourite player from Jan. 26-30 on www.soundersfc.com.
In addition to three players selected by the coaching staff, fans will get to vote on their favourite player, who will also be invited to the main camp.
"I'd rather be in the top three," said Lam. "If they like what they see, it's a better shot."
Lam is getting out the word to vote just in case.
"I'm trying to get people to watch and get the votes," said Lam, who's played soccer since he was four years old.
Lam's younger brother Matthew is currently playing for the Sheffield United reserves in England and Lam would like to take his own step up to play a higher level of soccer.
Lam currently leads the Edmonton Drillers in scoring with nine goals and five assists in eight games.
The Drillers (6-3) don't play again until Feb. 27 against Calgary (6-4).
